Chapter Five

The fresh air helped to relieve Caleb’s claustrophobia, but did nothing to clear the tangle of confused thoughts rushing through his head. He’d known it would be difficult to see Kevin with another man, but he’d never imagined it would be painful. Seeing Kevin and Jason kiss was like pouring acid directly onto his retinas.

“What the fuck!” Caleb kicked at the ground drawing surprised glances from the men standing in line to get into Splash.Just great. Now I’m creating a scene.

Heading south toward his apartment, Caleb focused on each foot making contact with the pavement and the sensation of the breeze as it hit his cheeks and rustled his hair. It wasn’t until he’d gotten about three blocks from the club before his mind stopped reeling and he was able to grab hold of individual thoughts.

Slowing his pace, Caleb stared at his feet counting the squares of cement making up the sidewalk. With some space separating him from the immediacy of Kevin and his new beau, Caleb could think more clearly. What had he expected? To be fine with the situation? And shouldn’t Kevin know not to slobber all over the guy in front of him?

The answer hit him as if he’d walked into a brick wall.Of course he wouldn’t know. Caleb had never shared his feelings. Sure, the two of them had flirted and bantered, but in all the years they’d been friends, not once did they ever talk about an attraction, and they’d never experienced even one drunken night of indiscretion with each other.

Digging his hands into his pockets, Caleb quickened his pace. When his hand stumbled upon the paper Josh had given him, he stopped and pulled the item out so he could look at it in the streetlight. The image of Josh’s rounded ass and broad shoulders took shape in his mind.

Josh was hot by any standard and had given Caleb his number. While bartenders flirted to increase their tips, they didn’t normally give out numbers. Something about Caleb had appealed to the man. There had been all the groping and fondling as well. Of course, the random men grabbing at him were probably after one thing, not his personality, Caleb guessed. Nonetheless, it was clear Caleb still had it, whateverit might be.

Folding the napkin carefully, he placed it back into his pocket for possible later use. It was easy to get pissed at Kevin, but Caleb realized he was the one who’d been standing in his own way. He’d wasted every opportunity to let Kevin know how he felt until it was too late. Then he’d acted like a spoiled brat because he didn’t like the results.

It was time to take matters into his own hands. Clearly there were options for him. He could follow in Kevin’s footsteps, go out on weekend nights, hook up with guys, meet people, build a reputation for himself. Clearly the club goers wanted to see and be seen. Caleb had withdrawn from the running by hanging out with his girlfriends.
